When parents get involved in the nitty gritty of a college application, some families find conflict arises. Different colleges have varying review processes. At almost all selective colleges however, every college essay will be read by multiple people. If a student is on the fence, not an early admit or deny, essays will probably be read multiple times by multiple people while an applicant is being discussed. Write This Way
Write This Way Admission officers realize that writing doesnât come easily to everyone, but with some time and planning, anyone can write a college application essay that stands out. Having someone else proofread an applicantâs essay is fineâ"any writer can benefit from another set of eyes that might pick up a typo or a minor grammar mistake. However, true editing starts to move into the substantive writing process and in the end the writer of the college essay should be the applicant. Too much assistanceâ"even from parentsâ" however well intentioned, serves to undermine the process and raise questions about the legitimacy and integrity of the whole application. I have seen too many essays where parents âhelpedâ and as result, the essay lost the studentâs voice. Too many words had been added that just did not reflect the studentâs vocabulary or mode of writing. College admissions readers are bright and intuitive and can tell when an essay has been âhelpedâ too much. I see no problem with parents doing a grammar/spelling check as well as offering suggestions on how an essay could be improved. Just be sure that it still reads like it was written by a 17 year old and it shares the story that is important to them and not just an important sounding topic that a parent thinks would be more impressive . Instead, pick one moment in time and focus on telling the story behind it. Take a minute and think about the college or university admission officers who will be reading your essay. How will your essay convey your background and what makes you unique? If you had the opportunity to stand in front of an admission committee to share a significant story or important information about yourself, what would you say? The college application essay is your chance to share your personality, goals, influences, challenges, triumphs, life experiences, or lessons learned. However, some parents are able to understand that over-editing essays is not a good thing. Everything should be spelled correctly, with correct grammar and punctuation, but the essay should sound like a high school student wrote it. Most of the time I see that parents get into an essay and take away the student voiceâ¦they make it too polished for a high school student. Colleges get suspicious when they receive an essay that sounds like a PhD wrote it. The end result should be a carefully designed, insightful essay that makes you proud. Take advantage of being able to share something with an audience who knows nothing about you and is excited to learn what you have to offer. Yes, the stakes can seem high, but it is ultimately the applicantâs record and work that is being evaluated and it should be theirs that is submitted as well. If possible, mom and dad should stay out of the essay writing business. Graduating from high school and thinking about heading off to college can be a scary time. Itâs easy to convince yourself that your classmates have all the answers and youâre the only one without a plan. Even students with the most detailed life plans will change course along the way. One of the most common struggles students encounter is resisting the urge to squeeze everything theyâve seen, done, and heard into their essay. But your application essay isnât your life story in 650 words. Not to mention why you're a good fit for the college or universityâ"and why it's a good fit for you. These are the stories behind the list of activities and leadership roles on your application. This connection of past experience to current maturity and self-knowledge is a key element in all successful personal essays. Colleges are very much looking for mature, self-aware applicants.

The Perfectionists Guide To The College Essay
The Perfectionist's Guide To The College Essay To avoid getting tangled up in one aspect of the discussion, youâll have to decide how long it should be. If itâs the most important aspect informing your conclusion, you can spend a little more time on that particular point. It could run into several paragraphs rather than just one or two. When you are planning your essay, you will think of or research the main elements that are needed in the body text. So if youâd like a guesstimate, you can assume that a 1,000-word essay will have between five and ten paragraphs. Take a look through your own library, too, to see if the books you already have given you some ideas for books youâd love to write. Itâs not that you think everyone should be like you; you just want more people to benefit from the same things that have made your life richer and more fun. For those who are looking for a basic rough idea, this is helpful. I only need to write 250 words and you donât have how many pages that is on your list. If you are given a writing assignment with a page number, the best thing to do is go directly to the person who made the assignment and ask for a word count. This will take away all the variations and help ensure your writing assignment meets expectations. What am I supposed to do if I write 1000 words, but it doesnât make the number of pages I want? I donât think I should have to write more words just because mine happen to be shorter than my classmates. We both wrote the same number of words, his are just longer so it takes up more pages. That means people who write long words have an advantage even though long words arenât always good to use. Just because an estimate wonât be exactly right doesnât mean it isnât useful. The truth is there is no definitive answer to this question. The number of words it will take to fill a page will depend on a number of factors including the type of font used, the font size, spacing elements, the margins used on the paper, the paragraph length, etc. For example, if the assignment says the writing should be in 10-point font, itâs going to take a greater number of words to fill a page than if the assignment requires a 12-point font. These words may not be perfect and will likely need to be heavily edited, but it gets the ideas down and keeps them from getting stuck on one area of their book. Itâs a way to motivate them to get the book done. It works well for me, but I know others who donât do well with it. I think it depends a lot on your personality, but forcing myself to be consistent day in and day out helps me get my books done. Without a daily word count, I would never complete them. If itâs for something informal and you simply need a general guideline, you can find it below. For those who need a general rule of thumb, a typical page which has 1-inch margins and is typed in 12 point font with standard spacing elements will be approximately 500 words when typed single spaced. For assignments that require double spacing, it would take approximately 250 words to fill the page. Again, the type of font used can make the word count higher or lower, but itâs a good rule of thumb for those who are simply looking for a general estimation. It would be safe to assume you need at least one paragraph for each of these. Of course, if there is a lot of information to cover in order to explore each area, you may need more. This is a rule of thumb, which means it wonât always work quite that way, but itâs handy all the same. In academic work, your paragraphs are likely to be a bit longer than most of the ones you see in this blog post. On average, there are usually 100 to 200 words in a paragraph.
